A READING LIST FOR THE U.S. ARMY TODAY

The way to solve the Soldier's Load problem is to look at him HOLISTICALLY and vigorously examine every ounce of gear carried to reduce weight

The time has come for EVERY U.S. Army Soldier, and not just officers to get his head into the art of war and develop a "coup d'oeil" or understanding of everything at-a-glance. The days of the enlistedmen as the whip crackers who handles details only and the officers thinking about "bigger issues" is over and has been a disaster for everyone. ALL issues are the concern of ALL Army Soldiers, anything less and we will continue to be out-smarted by asymmetric advantage seeking enemies. The Army should have a reading list of military books for promotion points and in addition to these the following books should be read at various milestones during Army service:

ENLISTMENT/JOINING ROTC/OCS

Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose

BASIC TRAINING

Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein
Saving Private Ryan by Steven Spielberg (movie to watch)

NEW! How much do you know about Starship Troopers? Take the test now!

AIRBORNE SCHOOL

Curahee! by Donald Burgett

IOBC/IAT

The Killer Angels by Michael Schaara
Once and Eagle by Anton Myrer

PLDC/Advanced Course

We Were Soldiers Once and Young by LTG Hal Moore and Joe Galloway

BNCOC

The Last 100 Yards by H.J. Poole

ANCOC

Strategy by B.H. Liddell-Hart

Combined Arms Staff and Services School or "CAS Cubed"

The Art of War by Sun Tzu

ALL Soldiers regardless of rank/position should read Air-Mech-Strike: Asymmetric Maneuver Warfare for the 21st Century by BG David Grange (Retired) et al to get a better sense of the direction Army transformation needs to move towards.
