Big fat magnesium batteries for AN/PRC-77s...Lethal square Lithium batteries for AN/PVS-7B night vision goggles, 9-volt batteries for MILES gear..."D" cell batteries for anglehead flashlights...and TA-312 field phones...

This is just the beginning! We haven't even discussed the AN/PSN-11 PLGR GPS special-purpose batteries....or the....

We need to draw the line somewhere and a good place to start is the "AA" battery. Compact, and available anywhere, not just from slow bureaucratic channels, they are available in rechargeable and lithium versions to power Army electronic devices for light weight/low cost.

The "AA" powers the Mini-Mag type flashlight and the AN/PVS-7B. It can now power the AN/PVS-4 NVD mounted on weapons by a $75 adaptor from NVEC in Pennsylvania.

In contrast, the price for the hard-to-obtain, military-only BA-1567/U battery for the AN/PVS-4 is $10.00 each, and it only lasts approximately 10 hours. Using the "AA" adapter for the AN/PVS-4, the batteries should last up to 40 hours. I think it's obvious that buying the adapter would save a lot of money and problems.

The part number is AD-2, the price is $75.00 each. Depending on the quantity, the price may be lower, so contact NVEC if you would need more than 5. Unit IMPAC card orders can be taken over the phone, or visit you can visit their secure on-line order form

The Army should immediately stop buying the BA-1567/U battery and use the money to buy "AA" adaptors for every AN/PVS-4 in the inventory. Local units could take the initiative right now and do so. The same applies for the PLGR AN/PSN-11 which has an "AA" adaptor. The "AA" battery should be our rallying point whenever possible for all future Army electronics purchases.

The AN/PVS-4 is going to be around for years to come so the money spent to buy the "AA" battery adaptor is worth it and will pay for itself in a short time. The Defense Supply Center-Columbus (DSCC) has assigned the National Stock Number (NSN) 5855-01-460-9602 to the AN/PVS-4 - Generation III (GEN III) Night Weapon Sight. NVEC's Model Number 750 is the DoD-Standard AN/PVS-4 (Generation II, NSN-5855-00-629-5334), with a Generation III intensifier tube. The Model 750's detection and recognition ranges improve by about 60-percent when compared to the DoD-Standard. It may be March 1999 before this NSN is listed in the supply system.
